Joe Block

At just two years old, Joe Block sat down for his first piano lesson in Philadelphia. His parents, both physicians, understood how deeply music could shape a child’s mind. For Joe, practicing was quiet and solitary, but he quickly discovered that the music he made had a remarkable way of connecting people.

“Joe is a vital and most welcome new voice in music who’s already extending the profound documented legacy of how beautiful a piano can sound.”
— Benny Green

Introduced to Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and Schumann at a young age, Joe developed a deep appreciation for classical music that deepened through his studies at Temple University and Settlement Music School.

Joe’s introduction to jazz was playing for his middle school’s jazz ensemble. Joe began experimenting with improvisation in his own work and found inspiration in Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, and Miles Davis.

Reflecting on Philadelphia’s intergenerational music scene, Joe saw no better place to learn jazz. He studied at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts under mentor Lovett Hines, and frequented Chris’s Jazz Café—where he continued to play into college.

An especially formative moment came at 17 when Joe won the “Essentially Ellington” Jazz at Lincoln Center composition contest. The honor introduced him to Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center family.

Joe relocated to New York City to pursue the Columbia–Juilliard dual-degree program, earning a BA from Columbia and an MM from The Juilliard School while studying under his cherished mentor Frank Kimbrough. In 2026, Joe released his first album, Solo Piano Vol. 1, with a single goal: to create an honest representation of his artistry.
